The Hillbilly Mafia

Someone told me that Spike’s in Faribault had some of the best lighting of any venue in the area. I had met the guitar player from The Hillbilly Mafia at another gig and when I saw they were playing there I went to photograph them. The light there was sort of weird and really interesting. And they had smoke!  All bands should use smoke, purple, green, blue and pink lights. Sometimes when I am shooting and just look at the viewfinder I can’t really tell what the images will be like when I get them onto the computer. These turned out different than I had anticipated because of the quality of the light. They feel unnaturally graphic somehow for a photograph. I really like it when the images are a surprise when you edit them.

Jonah and the Whales

Jonah and the Whales was a great band to shoot! They had fantastic lighting and a very theatrical lead singer which allowed for some really fun images. As an added bonus there was the occasional burst of smoke. There is something I love about the play of light on the smoke with the energy of a live band. I get completely lost and the time just flies while I try to find the perfect spot to stand so that the light hits just right. It feels like magic when all the elements line up and I get the shot I’m waiting for!

Joy Ride

I have been going to different venues and shooting bands for fun lately. I love watching the lighting and trying to find “the shot”. It often seems that some of the most interesting lighting is kind of out of the way, in unexpected places. GB Leighton’s Pickle Park is in Fridley and has amazing and colorful lights to play with. Joy Ride was an awesome band to photograph and fun to watch. They like having their photo taken and play for the camera, which makes it so much easier to get their great expressions. Plus they let me crawl around on stage with them which was a huge bonus!

Emily

Most of the time when shooting a portrait of someone it is to capture a glimpse of who they are today. They have a reason for getting their portrait taken. It’s a special occasion, to celebrate something, for a gift, or an upcoming holiday. Sometimes it’s just because they feel good. This portrait session of my friend Emily was actually something different. She has the most amazing eyes and eyelashes (I won’t give away her secrets) and I wanted to photograph them in detail. We borrowed some vintage hats, found some beautiful light and I spent an hour photographing her eyes and close ups of her gorgeous face.

Foundation Workshop Images

As a photographer I am always trying to discover what my style is, who I am artistically and to challenge myself to learn new ways of looking at the world. I want to have what I experience through my lens translate into the images I create.

I had the privilege of attending the Foundation Workshop in 2010. It is an extremely exciting and challenging workshop taught by some of the top photojournalists in the country. My group leader was Amy Deputy along with Huy Nguyen, Jay Premack and Rachel LaCour Niesen. They were amazing and I learned so much from each of them! The workshop is 4 days of no sleep, lots of trials, stretching yourself and being surrounded by unbelievably talented people.

We were each given a photojournalist assignment and two days to photograph. When we came back from a day of shooting we looked at all the images each person shot and talked about the process, picking out images that tell a story. It was quite humbling having such intense scrutiny of my images and also to witness the critiques of my fellow team members. The last day we met for dinner and watched everyone’s final presentations.

I learned a lot about myself, the things that I do well and the things I can do to improve my work. My assignment was a Crossfit gym. My story was all about the grueling physical workout the members put themselves through several days a week. I felt like I was doing the same thing with my photography. I was challenging myself in a new and extremely difficult way to push through to a new place. We had to pick a theme for our slideshow. What fit for me was “Pain is Weakness Leaving the Body”
